Chapter 13: Health and Illness
Health inequalities is a big challenge in the United States of America. This has proved to be the reason why the deaths and rates of certain diseases are higher on some groups as compared to others. In the United States, the minority group is the one that suffers more in this inequality gap. These groups were responsible for the sale of goods on different streets of USA, but on the rise of competition from supermarkets and other food outlets declining the participation of minority groups in the sale of food supplies affecting their income.
Therefore, it is evident that the poor health outcomes that are mostly experienced by minority groups are contributed by poverty, inadequate medical care and lack of information that has isolated and marginalize people along the lines of race, ethnicity and class. This inequalities have been created by policies such as mal-distribution of public resources that have driven these disparities in education, and civic power. These disparities have proved to be the reason why zip codes are good predictors of life expectancy and wealth.
This gap in health has called for a health culture to be built in the US to uplift strategies that address health issues of the marginalized groups (Rockeymoore, 2016). This health culture will be aimed at ensuring that there is equity in all groups. This will only be achieved if inequitable systems that reinforce disadvantage among the groups are disrupted. This will ensure that there are good financing schemes that determine access to quality care. Additionally, the psychological stressors should be addressed towards the achievement of a health culture in the US. The psychological stressors include domestic or state violence; race, gender or class based micro-aggressions thatcause depressions; and economic pressures.
A robust health culture dictates an understanding of the experiences of the different groups and how they affect their behaviors. It must support comprehensive health strategies that encourage a healthier future.
Chapter 14: War and Terrorism
The September 11 events resulted in so many things not only in the U.S but to the whole world. This is when the war on terror was unfolded, all nations around the world joined America in the fight against war and terror. Many people have lost their lives and others physically and psychologically affected due to wars around the world. America has been the major target of terrorism attacks from different militia groups.
The manner in which America has addressed insecurity issues has significant effects that ranges from global economic issues that have deepened inequality for most people around the globe; and environmental issues as well. The September 11 events resulted in a crackdown freedom liberties in different countries around the world. Some countries devised the ‘“war on terror” as an excuse to pursue more aggressive options on their own citizens’. Governments introduced draconian policies and measures that have threatened human rights in the name of fighting international terrorism.
The different definitions of terrorism have been used to criminalize certain groups out of favor and those in power and criminalize those who are fighting for human rights. This has put the minority groups and asylum-seekers at risk of being victimized. Terrorism have led to a mixture of political, social and economic reactions around the world. There is hatred among the different groups. The Muslim communities are the ones that have been victimized. In the United States, the Muslims are considered to be a threat to national security. There is antagonism between the Muslims and Christianity groups where one group perceive the other to be a threat. In the United States there is a war between the Blacks and Americans; Hispanics and the Americans (Shah, 2013).
War and terror has devastating effects not only to the citizens but also to the involved countries. People are dying, powerful countries are depleting resources of the developing countries, economic and living standards of countries are declining and global concerns are on the rise increasing tension among the different groups and countries around the world. To reduce this tension, the government should conduct public education on terror to educate the citizens on how to identify a terrorist from the larger group. It should also negotiate on arm treaties that prevent other countries from using their weapons.
Chapter11: Education
Education is regarded as a path to opportunity in the society and is meant to ensure that the society progresses. Those who work hard in schools are believed to secure good jobs and advance in the social and economic ladder. However, there is enough evidence that shows that education has failed in its mission of overcoming inequality in the society; it is reinforcing it (Boundless.com, n.d).
The failure of education in its mission is due to various factors. Schools are creating inequality since the whole education system is being guided by the dominant group’s ideology. What was once regarded as a reality has become a myth that only serves the interests...
