Before 1960s, family institution was one of the most fundamental entities in the country and even to the economy. Borrowing from the religious backgrounds, Americans held the family institution with much more respect than they do today (Donovan, 1 2011). Today, American family is disappearing at an alarming rate and the institution is in trouble. Out of every 10 people in America, less than half that number believes in the institution and feels that it is doomed to fail in the near future (Donovan, 2 2011). Much like the trend in the European countries, more Americans are finding it easier to cohabit, with fewer ready to marry. Those who wed are mostly in their old age when they need a life companion.
In the European countries, the numbers of children that are born outside wedlock are close to 60 percent while in United States it is approaching the 40% mark (Donovan, 3 2011). The responsibility of the family to the children has shifted to the society. With the high numbers of children that are born outside wedlock, the taxpayer is bound to dig deeper into their budgets to make sure that they can maintain these trends.
