Singapore Social Work and Healthcare Choosing and Applying Social Work Skills Social workers are endowed with several skills that can assist them in performing their roles and functions in the healthcare sector. With key functions of a medical social worker ranging from crisis intervention, psychosocial assessment and counselling, skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, monitoring, and evaluation are essential (LaSala, 2022). Choosing the right social work skill will depend highly on the healthcare context and the patient's unique needs and preferences. Utilizing the appropriate set of skills in such situations can then effectively support and empower the patient in their quest for quality care.             A case example of a 30-year-old male patient with a spinal injury that limits them to using a wheelchair requires a specific set of skills to manage. In this case, a social worker must use advocacy to ensure the respect of the patient's rights, access to services, and social justice in society. This means that the worker should identify potential barriers to accessing healthcare and help the patient overcome them by providing access to relevant resources. Apart from that, the social worker should also employ effective communication through active listening and feedback that promotes mutual understanding. Ultimately, this can create a rapport with the patient, encourage dialogue and ensure an effective environment for them to express themselves freely.
