Unlike anxiety which is a normal human emotion, anxiety disorder is a serious mental illness which causes worry and fear in Jake’s life. Behaviorists would define Jake’s condition as a physical expression of thoughts and panic about the capability to manage situations. Behaviorists believe that life circumstances do not cause stress; it depends on the client (in this case Jake) choose to interpret events surrounding his life. Anxiety disorder is caused by factors like setting unrealistic goals and expectations, and lack of work-life balance. The client can control the anxiety disorder simply by developing the ability to control stress; thus fostering resilience and self-esteem (Lowrance, 2014).
According to the cognitive approach, cognitive distortions such as catastrophize, arbitrary inference, personalization, and over-generalization are the systematic ways that may influence the client to twist and distort information about himself and the environment. These are biases that often cause and reinforce negative thoughts patterns about himself, which results into increased anxiety. Cognitive therapies include teaching Jake to cope and to reinforce himself with developing self-worth (Lowrance, 2014).
