In the United States, alcohol is the most commonly abused drug. People drink alcohol in birthday parties, in graduation parties, in office parties, and in other gatherings where alcohol is allowed. People give different for consuming alcohol. Some say it is because of past experiences, others say stress, others take alcohol because of peer pressure, and others drink mainly because of their impulsive personality. However, on the other hand, there are those who do not like alcohol and stay as far away from it as possible. These people also give varying reasons starting with simply a dislike of the taste of alcohol. Others say they do not like to wield control, and others do not take alcohol because of their religious inclination. Regardless of the category a person is in, the truth as per the CDC is that “excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths and 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) each year in the United States from 2006-2010.” A drink or two may seem harmless, but in the end, the repercussions are dire and not worth the money spent buying alcohol. While it is true that alcohol does taste good (to some people) and that it gives people the illusion of that their problems have disappeared, this essay seeks to indicate that its short-term and long-term health risks far outweigh the stated benefits and thus its consumption should be controlled.
