Conflicting Visions: Addressing Family Conflict
Impact of Personal Beliefs on Professional Practice
Personal beliefs will, in one way or another, interfere with how a human services professional approaches specific scenarios. Ensuring that all the parties feel understood regardless of my feelings about those parties is based on my passion for inclusiveness and cultural competence knowledge (Kilag et al., 2024). It is paramount to avoid biased feelings and provide a healthy dialogue. Without expressing my own beliefs, I must help Karl and Jordan, as well as Karl’s parents, come to an understanding of each other’s stance on these issues. By keeping it balanced, my professional practice stays ethical and focuses on the client’s welfare and the interests of the participants. Hence, I uphold equality and non-judgment to embrace diversity and create an environment in which everyone feels comfortable to express their opinion. This means considering Karl's parents' religious beliefs and promoting Karl and Jordan's right to marry whomever they want. This allows one to focus on multiple dimensions of client issues.
Personal Beliefs about Culture, Diversity, and Inclusion
Cultural diversity brings value to the community and makes integration mandatory for maintaining peace (Zilola et al., 2023). In this case, these beliefs highlight the need to listen to and respect Karl's parents' culture and religion while promoting the freedom of Karl and Jordan to love and marry anyone they consider their life partners. It also entails the ability to recognize the fundamental beliefs of Karl’s parents as they are while advocating for Karl’s right to love and acceptance. This approach enhances the dignity of the party involved and thus is helpful in the settlement of family disputes within the community. Understanding that cultural and religious issues play a crucial role in people’s lives, I seek to find the connection between the parents’ attitudes and the couple’s goals. Therefore, I focus on ensuring that every party receives equal empathy and finds a solution that fits cultural and personal interests.
Feelings about Same-Sex Couples
My attitude towards same-sex couples has changed gradually from being indifferent to supporting them and their right to be recognized as married. This has been facilitated by awareness and understanding of issues concerning the 'LGBTQ+' in society. In this context, my understanding of the same-sex union contributes to my compassion towards Karl and Jordan and how their relationship matters and should be accepted within the family unit. However, my professional obligations entail not over-supporting Karl’s ideas while at the same time observing the beliefs Karl’s parents hold. I would establish an environment that lacks bias so that Karl's relationship and his parents' religion can be appreciated. Such balance is imperative in managing the various dilemmas within the family structures and in helping the couple in a culturally sensitive and relevant manner.
Family Treatment of Disagreements
Families should deal with conflicts with respect, be willing to listen and be ready to acknowledge another’s point of view (Paolini, 2020). Specifically for Karl and his parents, it is necessary to create a communication environment so that everyone is ready and willing to listen and accept the other’s opinions and emotions. This increases the chances of finding a common ground, thus reducing divergence. I would arrange such a discussion and offer support to the family regarding their feelings and how to deal with them to become reunited. I would educate them concerning love, respect, and understanding and help them find the proper ways of assisting each other even when they disagree. This also aids in solving the current dispute and improves the relationships among family members, enabling healthy conflict resolution in the future. By properly handling the conversation, I wish to enable the family t...
