Conducting a research requires an in-depth analysis of the topic. A search strategy is important during the initial process of research. A PICOT question helps in generating terms to be used in literature search (Hastings & Fisher, 2014). PICOT question helps clarify the question making it easier to find a suitable answer. To evaluate the effectiveness of obesity prevention programs my picot question is:
Among high school student between 12 to 17 years (P), who participate in childhood obesity prevention programs (I) as compared to those who do not participate in these programs ( C ) minimize obesity prevalence (O) within one year (T)
The foreground questions
The foreground questions focus on the relationships between participation in obesity prevention programs and nonparticipation among children for children between the ages of 12 to 17 years and how participation is associated with obesity prevalence (Cunningham, Kramer & Narayan, 2014).
Background Information
Obesity is one of the lifestyle diseases affecting American children; research studies indicate that 17 percent of American teenagers are obese (Cutler, Edward, and Shapiro, 2013). Contributory factors like modern lifestyle combined with limited physical activities increase the chances of children being at risk of being obese at an early age (Cutler, Edward, and Shapiro, 2013). Children eating patterns are determined by adults ,hence parents who eat unhealthy foods put their children at a higher risk of acquiring obesity (Cutler, Edward, and Shapiro, 2013). School environment plays an important role in shaping a child’s behavior; hence, it can be a good platform to implement obesity prevention programs. School-based obesity intervention programs should address healthy diet, frequent checkups ad promoting physical exercise (Cutler, Edward, and Shapiro, 2013). A comprehensive obesity prevention program should involve parents, children, teachers, local stakeholders and policy makers (Cutler, Edward, and Shapiro, 2013).
