As human service professionals, our services are guided by theoretical frameworks or models. The three models that will be discussed this week include the medical model, public service model, and human service model. Each of these models has a different perspective on how problems develop and takes a different direction on how human service workers should approach problem resolution.
The medical model sees the person coming for help as sick, ill, or otherwise not in a healthy position.
The public health model can be seen as a bridge connecting the gap between the medical model and the human services model. This model is about improving public health by improving education, nutrition, food safety, water supplies, immunization, and maternal and child health.
The human service model focuses on the interaction between individual and environment and on interpersonal and environmental conflicts.
