Trends in Christianity in Africa
Christianity in Africa has seen tremendous growth in the recent past. According to research by Gordon–Conwell Theological Seminary Africa has approximately 667 million individuals who identify as Christians a 50% in 2020 increase from 9% in 1900 (Gzurlo, 2020). With the development of Christianity, Africa has integrated the concept of sports ministry to make Christianity interesting and effective. Sports ministry can be defined as an outreach that includes sporty and interesting activities that align with Christian teachings and values. Sports Ministry in Africa can be a strong pillar of evangelism, Pentecostalism, syncretism, and social development-oriented religion. This assignment will discuss trends in the sports ministry of African Christianity and their implications.
Pentecostalism
Also referred to as a charismatic movement, the Pentecostal movement put more emphasis on the holy spirit, gifts, and fruits of the holy spirit, and individual’s encounter with God and divine interventions. Pentecostalism has gained significant growth in Africa. Additionally, Pentecostalism represents 12 % of Africa’s total population making it the largest trend in Christianity ( Pew Research Center, 2019). Further, Pentecostalism is characterized by a set of doctrines with some originating from the ancient church. Further, the reference to the bible is significant as it emphasizes the intended message to the people. This has attracted a massive following as it teaches prosperity, fruits, and gifts of the holy spirit, healing, and deliverance to the people following the social, economic, and political status of the continent.
