The Retelling of Myths
Part 1.
Since the start of civilization, humans have used literature, myths, and stories as a part of our culture. However, rather than a mere form of entertainment, these stories have usually bore symbolic and essential messages that aim to teach individuals how to act in line with the rules and demands of society. Accordingly, this ‘reinforcement’ is achieved through the retelling of stories. In this article, I would like to discuss some examples of how the retelling of myths and stories has helped reinforce or destroy societal norms.
As discussed in the lecture, myths, stories, and other art pieces have all been retold repeatedly. Whether it be our story from the Bible, fairy tales of various eras or myths of different cultures and religions, the retelling of stories happens as they are adapted and re-adapted in contemporary culture. One typical example of this is the myth of Greek gods and goddesses. One could see that while these stories existed centuries before our current time, these ideas are still reiterated and retold in films, movies, books, and other pieces of art.
In line with this, I realized that the retelling of stories could serve two purposes, whether to reinforce its message to challenge it.
