Buddhism is one of the religions that belong to the indigenous Indian. It comprises of varied beliefs, traditions, practices, and traditions based on teachings of Siddhartha Gautama/Buddha. Ideally, the Buddha means the awaken one in the Indigenous Indian subcontinent. Buddhism has two main branches, which include the Theravada and the Mahayana. These branches are widely spread to various regions of the world. Buddhism is found majorly in the Asian and the Indian regions. Buddhist population is estimated to be 360 million to 1.6 billion making it become one of the fastest growing religions globally. Teaching of the Buddhist religion is achievable using the Buddhist schools where learners receive teachings on liberation, moral behavior, and canonicity from the various teachings and Buddhist scriptures.
Historical Perspective of the Buddhism Religion
Historically, Buddhism roots arise from the Indigenous Indian subcontinent during the second millennium BCE. Series of religious turmoil characterized this period leading to the need of the development of a new religion that could free the people from suffering brought by the Vedic Brahmanism. Buddhism uprising began in the Greater Magadha stretching to the Sravasti, Rajagrha, and to the Aryavarta, the eastern part of the indigenous Indian subcontinent. The Indian Buddhism is classifiable into five periods of uprising. The periods include the Pre-sectarian Buddhism, Sectarian Buddhism, Early Buddhist schools period, Early Mahayana Buddhism period, Late Mahayana Buddhism period, and the Esoteric Buddhism period. The Buddhist belief in the continuous repetitive cycle of life i.e. birth and death (Samsara). Samsara refers to a Buddhist belief that is rooted in one’s rebirth occurs after every six realism of their existence. Thus, every realism cycle is characterized by experiences such as series of suffering which can be physical or psychological suffering. Additionally, the Buddhist belief in the existence of Karma, the force responsible for driving the realism cycle of suffering underwent by human beings. Karma represents bodily actions, mind, or speech that arises from the mental intent. Rebirth in Buddhism refers to that process where one undergoes through succession of lifetimes running from conception to death. Buddhism teachings lay their basis on the Buddha principles. Buddha, their God refers to a fully awakened supernatural being with purified mind with poisons of aversion, desire, and ignorance. Thus, Samsara does not bind the Buddha who ends the suffering of its followers. However, the Buddhist recognizes the existence of other gods while the Mahayana recognizes the existence of their own other gods such as Amitabha and Vairocana. The Buddhist community has many festivals celebrated through the year. According to the Mahayana tradition, the festivals aim at celebrating the birth of the Bodhisattvas.
