Where Should We Start To Achieve Gender Equality?
Although some populations argue that gender inequality is declining in society, the issue is still prevalent due to constraints like religious and cultural practices. Some people are held by their beliefs to undermine females. "The recent World Inequality Report (WIR2018; Avaredo et al., 2018) is a major systemic assessment of globalization outlining income and wealth inequality, and documents a steep rise in global economic inequality since the 1980s, and this is despite strong growth in many emerging economies (Robinson, 2017).” This evidence reveals how women suffer even in the developed economies due to the existing gender stereotypes in global populations. Most people in the demographics think that men are powerful than women leading to the undermining of women. The fact about differences in the capability of women is wrong, and the perception should be erased from the minds of people, to create a path towards the achievement of gender equality in the community. The progress in the issue will give women the chance to enjoy opportunities like education, job after schooling, and a capacity to fight for their rights in case of violation (Robinson, 2017). Hence, achieving gender equality should emerge from dealing with issues such as gender stereotypes in childhood and workplace/ work-family balance inequalities.
Dealing with gender stereotypes in childhood
Since televisions have become essential to the everyday lives of children in the current generations, the medial channels should not air programs promoting gender stereotypes. The most common applications reveal various stereotypes in gender roles, such as boys can perform well in math than girls (Wille et al., 2018). The children watching and listening to the sessions will grow thinking that boys are superior to girls, and the chain is likely to be transmitted to adulthood where the same girls will be undermined as women. Although the idea of the conversation might be unclear, both girls and boys will get affected, whereby the former will end up performing poorly while the latter does exceptionally well. This performance stands as a loop to the future and success of the two genders as the boys will always be on top of the girls in similar perspectives (Wille et al., 2018). Hence, television channels should consider the far-reaching impacts of every topic raised in any program before the actual airing of the discussion question.
The effects of the topics discussed in television programs do not only affect the performance of girls but also their future lives in chosen careers. The stereotypes impacting the environment of a child’s growth results to career issues whereby most women may feel that they cannot fit in math-related careers since they grew up thinking and knowing that only boys and at that moment men can handle the given job specifications (Wille et al., 2018). The math motivational differences in the respective audiences trigger gender inequality as most women think that no matter how hard they try, men will always be better than them. On the other hand, one would be right to say that the masculinity in men originates from the loop created by the stereotypes, whereby most men get motivated to work hard to prove the community right in the provided perceptions (Wille et al., 2018). In this case, men dominate women in society as they always see them as lesser human beings. While girls are negatively affected, boys benefit from the stereotypes resulting in a gap between the two groups, which ultimately results in gender inequality. Thus, television producers should understand the impact of any program aired to all kids in the effort to push for gender equality and shun the stereotypes favoring boys at the expense of girls.
The present statistics show that the gender differences in motivational disposition in math affect the general performance of girls and later women in society. Should media channels air any program that might trigger gender inequality in the community? These channels should not be used for the wrong purpose of undermining the capability and potential of girls through creation, and following various stereotypes in society such as boys are better than girls (Wille et al., 2018). The iteration of the issues is teachers value boys more than girls since the impact of the stereotypes is also evident in their profession. In this case, if girls grow at the center of gender bias where the body can recognize their efforts, they enter a phase of low self-esteem in adulthood, and all they think is that they cannot be equal or perform better than boys. Hence, the fight against gender inequality should start at the early ages of children through the introduction of the right programs that fight for equality.
Parents and teachers should implement various measures to curb gender bias in kids and nurture them in an environment where they know and understand they are equal irrespective of different genders. The community should check their preferences and counteract them to avoid inaction of stereotypes in young kids in the effort to prevent the societal expectations of males and females.
