Unfortunately, domestic terrorism has taken on epidemic proportions in the United States. These mass murders have taken a grave toll on the individuals and communities involved, not to mention the larger sociological impact. This stark reality has instilled fear in most Americans, and it has raised many questions about how best to address it. For example: Why is one community more or less at risk than another? What preventive measures can be taken to improve the safety of your community? Is environmental design (e.g., metal detectors, border walls, closed circuit television) sufficient to deter domestic terrorism? Are governmental agencies and legislation (e.g., gun control laws, the Department of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration) doing enough to deter domestic terrorism? For this Discussion, you will explore the sociological impact of domestic terrorism by addressing these questions and more through the lens of a specific incidence of mass violence of your choosing.
