I would advise a U.S. parent to develop screen time rules for their toddlers. For toddlers aged between two and five years, parents should limit screen time to one hour every day, and such exposure should incorporate high-quality programming as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Toddlers and infants develop important skills as they play with physical objects instead of virtual devices on screens (Lammers et al., 2022). Limiting screen time to less than one hour is beneficial to the toddler as the caregiver has enough time to interact with their child and thus promotes the infant’s language capacity.
For young children (ages 2-6 years), exposure to screen media can help reinforce lessons in educational settings. Using developmentally feasible educational digital tools and videos can help young children learn material they might have struggled with.
