Physical Development Throughout the Periods of Development
Units 3 and 4 have been devoted to understanding physical development. Understanding physical development that occurs from infancy through adolescence is essential for promoting optimal growth, support, and well-being. This understanding can help prevent potential issues and can help foster healthy development across various domains of a child's life.
For this assignment, please use the Unit 4 Assignment Template to write a descriptive essay describing major trends in physical changes for the four periods of development - infancy/toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence - by focusing on body growth and motor development. The following points should be addressed in the essay:
Describe one detailed example of body growth for each of the four periods of development (pubertal changes can be used as examples of body growth in your discussion of adolescence).
Describe one detailed example of motor development for each of the four periods of development.
Explain how genetics and the environment can influence physical development for each of the four periods of development.

Throughout lifespan, humans experience numerous physical development changes in the brain, body, motor skills, and senses. During infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence, humans experience distinct physical growth patterns. The changes that characterize human development from infancy to adolescence are integral in helping humans become independent as they develop into adulthood. Genetics and the environment shape physical development across the four developmental stages.
The infancy/toddlerhood stage is marked by rapid changes in body and motor development. When it comes to body changes, infants experience major changes in height and weight. For example, at one year, the height of a typical infant stands at 32 inches, which indicates that they have attained more than 50% of their height at birth (Berk, 2022). At two years, an infant typically averages 36 inches, which is 75% of their height at birth. In essence, it is clear that infants experience rapid growth in height during infancy. Infancy is also characterized by major changes in motor development. For example, at six weeks, infants are able to hold their heads erect and steady when they are held upright (Berk, 2022). The growth rate of infants is influenced by the genetic makeup of biological parents as well as environmental factors such as socio-economic status (Kuther, 2023).
