Edward Bradford Titchener was the pioneer of structuralism, a school of thought that employed introspection to “search for elemental ingredients of their experiences” (Henley, 2019, p.256). Titchener's subjects, the introspectionists, sought to describe raw elemental processes that build complex cognitive experiences. Mental elements form a key concept under Titchener’s structuralism. As per the theorist's conclusions, the elemental processes of consciousness are made up of images, affections, and sensations (Henley, 2019). In this case, images refer to elements of ideas, affections refer to elements of emotions, and sensations describe the elements of perceptions. Another key concept in Titchener's structuralism is the law of combination. After isolating different elements of thought, Titchener sought to determine the process through which they combine to form complex mental processes (Henley, 2019). He embraced traditional associanism and thus made the principle of contiguity his basic law of association (Henley, 2019).
