Based on Carl Jung’s theory of self, the self is one of the archetypes that a human acquires through heredity. Accordingly, the self represents a unified combination of a person’s consciousness and unconsciousness; furthermore, Jung defines the process of formation of the self as a complicated process involving the gradual integration of various psychological aspects of human personality (Smythe, 2013). This process of the development of the self is called individuation; understanding the concept of the self and its formation is crucial to learning about the causes of various psychological problems, as Jung believes that disharmony in the composition of unconsciousness and consciousness is the root cause of various psychological problems (Smythe, 2013). Therefore, the self is the centre of a person’s personality, and to live a stable life, a person has to maintain a cohesive balance between consciousness, unconsciousness, and ego (Smythe, 2013).
Anima or Animus
Anima is a crucial and perplexing archetype that Carl Jung identifies in humans. By definition, the anima is the unconscious opposite of the social façade of a personality called persona; accordingly, Jung considers male animus a hidden feminine aspect of a masculine personality. Likewise, as for females, it represents the hidden and unconscious masculine aspect of their personality (Yunara & Kardiansyah, 2017). The feminine animus has the characteristics of empathy, trust, intuition, and emotional bond, while the masculine animus features a person’s logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence (Yunara & Kardiansyah, 2017).
