Define prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, and racism, according to the book.
Prejudice refers to an unjustified and negative attitude towards a person based on this person’s membership of a social group. For instance, a person may hold prejudicial views towards a Hispanic or a Muslim individual.
A stereotype refers to a particular view that has been widely adopted regarding specific individuals and particular behavioral tendencies primarily to represent an entire group of these people or practices (Dovidio, 2010). Such opinions may or may not completely mirror the reality of this group.
Discrimination refers to the act of treating a person differently from other people based on an individual’s possession of specific characteristics such as religion, sexuality, race, and gender (Dovidio, 2010). Discriminatory behavior can take numerous forms from relatively mild behavior such as social avoidance to violent acts such as hate crimes.
Racism involves the systematic implementation of a particular doctrine revolving around racial supremacy that maintains the superiority of a specific race over another. Racial supremacy is the central tenet of racism and is commonly associated with beliefs that some racial groups are genetically inferior (Dovidio, 2010). Racists also assert that due to their group being genetically superior, it has afforded them with higher intelligent levels than those of other groups.

Stereotype threat refers to the anxiety of confirming a negative stereotype. When a person is confronted with a negative stereotype about their group, and they are placed at risk of confirming that stereotype about that group, it affects the person’s ability to handle a provided task adequately.
