What is the focus of the question?
The focus of the question is to determine whether language influences thought. Language is a symbolic tool people use to present cognitive processes and communicate their thoughts (Harley, 2014). According to Ethnology, considered the most extensive language catalog, there are over 7,000 languages globally. Thought, on the other hand, is an idea or opinion produced by the process of thinking. Several authors, including Noam Chomsky, Benjamin Whorf, and Robin Lakoff, have written on the issues. However, a famous hypothesis first advanced by Edward Sapir and later developed by Benjamin Whorf presented a debated stance on the relationship between language and thought. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis states that in a new principle of relativity, observers are not led by the same physical evidence to the same picture of the universe unless their linguistics backgrounds are similar or can be calibrated (Gleitman & Papafragou, 2005).
