Racial Trauma Scale
Racial trauma, which can pervasively impact individuals, results from systemic and institutionalized racism (Churchwell et al., 2020). Experts can characterize racial trauma by a wide range of emotional and psychological symptoms ranging from stress, anxiety, depression, hypervigilance, and feeling of inferiority. There are inadequate measures for the clinical assessment of racial trauma by those affected. Hence, there is a need to understand the reliability and validity of the racial trauma scale (RTS) developed for clinical assessment.
The racial trauma scale shows reliability after being condensed to 30 items from the 64-item RTS across all the examined groups. Internal consistency reliability on the test's three components: lack of safety, negative cognitions, and difficulty coping assessed using Cronbach's alpha, showed good reliability greater than 0.90 for each component (Williams et al., 2022). The study had a significant and divergent sample size across the United States of America and showed consistency of measurement across different individual subscales. This scenario displays a higher quality of the scale due to its consistency in measurement.
The racial trauma scale strongly exhibited convergent and concurrent validity through the bivariate correlation analyses conducted on the data. In addition, it showed consistency with the available literature, thus higher accuracy and meaningfulness of the results it obtained (Williams et al., 2022). Through criterion validity conducted, the scale could distinguish between individuals who had and those without racial trauma. The scale displayed an excellent ability to measure the aspects of trauma it was intended to measure. However, it is recommended to adopt the 30-item RTS despite the nine-item RTS detecting racial trauma for clinical purposes since it will provide a wide array of information for symptom understanding.
