Disorders can be measured over a broad spectrum with levels ranging from mild symptoms to extreme ones. The differences between normal and abnormal behavior that can be used to characterize disorders vary significantly between people based on various factors (Lyons & Martin, 2016). Consequently, while most individuals may view themselves, as usual, mild symptoms of abnormality may occasionally present themselves. Therefore, the claim that nearly a quarter of Americans meet the criteria for a disorder bears important truths primarily due to the changing conception surrounding abnormal behavior.
In mental health issues, clinical significance may be used to determine whether or not the individual suffers from a disorder. According to the American Psychiatric Association, clinical significance in mental health refers to the patterns in behavior considered severe enough to warrant an intervention due to the individual's inability to manage it alone (Lyons & Martin, 2016). The main factors considered in the above definition include psychological disability subjective distress and cultural inappropriateness that currently determine a variance in behavior from commonly accepted ones. However, the above definition does not disapprove of any other factors that may constitute mental disorders, including aspects of religion and culture, which, to some extent, may lead to such a diagnosis.
From previous research, it is evident that a significant percentage of the population suffered from a type of disorder.
