Applying Sleep Psychology to Everyday Life
Introduction
I am in my second semester and I am taking ‘Introduction to Psychology’ as one of the courses. The course has been interesting and it helps in working towards my final grade in my main course. Generally, psychology has enabled me to view life and the world from different perspectives, thus enjoying my time at the university to the fullest and living a less stressful life. The course has also enabled me to understand abstract psychological practices and how to apply them in my personal life, academic life, and professional life.
Personal Life
Learning psychology has influenced my perception of life and daily living. Most people are confined to the belief that one should sleep for at least 8 hours to be ready for the next day. However, the truth is that keeping one’s daily sleeping patterns makes one more relaxed than sleeping for many hours. Study shows that six hours of sleep are better than one hour. The five stages of sleep are also important, and those who observe them have high-quality sleep-time (Hьlsheger, Feinholdt, & Nьbold, 2015). One rests in intervals about 90 minutes in the first four stages of the cycle before reaching the maximum time. Once that time is reached, they wake up. Therefore, I ensure that I enjoyed the four stages to get quality sleep and rest.
The course has also equipped me with skills to understand the positive side of anxiety, in which case it is called General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) (Chebyshev, Berechikidze, Philippova, Lazareva, & Gorozhanina, 2019). Stress and anxiety have helped me to develop resilience skills and also understand the concept of resistance to viruses, illnesses, and diseases. However, this stress should not go beyond the exhaustion stage. Therefore, I have learned to use stress as a stimulant to work towards goals and achieve more.
Academic Life
Psychology has taught me that school life requires one to have control and action to succeed. I used to get stressed due to large academic workloads with little time to complete them. Sometimes I would procrastinate. However, psychology helped me to overcome this and understand that I should plan and start doing my assignments early enough and avoid a last-minute rush (Sleep, Lynam, Widiger, Crowe, & Miller, 2019). I complete my assignments during the week and hav...
