Attachment in childhood is a basic need that provides the foundation for developing interpersonal relationships throughout one's life. According to “Personality Psychology: Understanding Yourself” by Twenge and Campbell (2021), fundamental interactions with primary caregivers shape the child's sense of attachment and trust. Understanding is the developmental achievement of the individual having a securely attached relationship to the caregiver, which is obtained through the latter's consistent and sensitive caregiving. The analysis of secure attachment applies to children who usually raise their confidence in forming long, endearing relationships throughout their childhood. It makes them come to relationships with trust and reasonable expectation of support, thus making them have more well-adjusted and satisfying adult relationships. On the other hand, insecure types of attachment, including either anxious or avoidant, are a result of inadequate caregiving. Anxious attachment stems from the inability to obtain consistent responses from the caregivers; this results in a person seeking constant validation and being highly fearful of rejection.
