Introduction
Workplaces are a combination of positive and negative emotions. Rapid development in all areas has led to an increase in occupational stressors. Inflation has caused poverty, still, people find it hard to find jobs which pay them well, give them a suitable environment to work in and also compliments their mental health. Within the work-industry, two perspectives prevail; the employers perspective and the employee’s point of view. The employer has a completely different set of goals, ambition, and target. He/she wants to see the company thrive, bloom and produce maximally. Their view is beyond an individual nature rather towards the betterment of the entire company. They have to provide a nourishing and advanced environment for their employees to work hard and with ease. On the other hand, employees tend to work for themselves. They may have positive views and ambitions for their firm but work by focusing on their given agenda. In order to keep a balance between employers and employees, organizational psychology has studied many factors which influence the productivity and efficiency of both the companies, employers and employees. These work environments have occasionally been highlighted in the media industry as well. The portrayal of work ethics and organizational commitment have ranged from ideal to the worst scenarios. While people may find the movie quite attractive, the occupational representation may be deceiving at times. Keeping in mind, some organizational factors, following section will be reviewing the movie ‘The Intern’ which focuses on an old-age retired, widowed man who starts to work as an intern in a newly established and flourishing firm. The movie highlights both perspectives; struggles of a developing company as well as the determination of the employer.
Selection
Employee selection is a rigorous procedure of finding the right person for the right job. It is a process of screening out applications and going through the skill set of all applicants to fit with the company’s vacancies. The selection itself is important for the company to save time and money. Finding the correct candidate ultimately benefits the company by reducing the turnover rate and absenteeism. A typical selection procedure involves the initial designing of the job advertisement with an eligibility criterion. The candidates who apply are then called in for a preliminary interview. This interview is purposed to eliminate any candidates who do not fall up to the eligibility standards, assess family/educational/occupational background, find more about the candidate’s skills, competencies, and interests. The second step is to collect and screen out all the filled out application forms highlighting the candidate’s demographics and essentials. Applicants who are then verified eligible for the job are asked to attempt required written tests e.g. an intelligence test, aptitude test, psychological tests, etc. These tests provide unbiased results of each applicant. Candidates who pass the tests are then called for a final interview after reference checking. The finalized candidates are given a confirmation call and employment letter.
In the selected movie, the firm ‘About the Fit’ is looking for old-age interns. Their initial selection procedure appears to be innovative. Their advertisement requires the applicants to provide a video which summarizes their qualifications, past experiences, skill set and interests. This idea saves the time and money of both the firm and employees. It also gives an opportunity for the applicants to describe themselves innovatively through a video rather than going through a tiresome and typical procedure of driving to the firm, waiting and doing the tedious paperwork. On the contrary, the movie shows a slight difference in the employee’s experiences and job requirements. While the job needs the employee to have advanced computer skills, old-age people tend to stick to their manners and modus operandi. This is why an employee’s selected faced problems in the start but soon caught up by their colleague’s training and guidance. The selection and suitability of the job is somewhat incorrectly demonstrated in the movie because besides selection, Ben is rarely given an assignment that actually relates to the company’s needs rather he is mostly there for Jules emotional support or substituting for her driver (i.e. Ben’s organizational skills were not used up to the mark). This could be better depicted by giving Ben more relatable work such as finding better ideas for Jules to incorporate in the company’s policies.
Emotions at Work
Spending 8 to 14 hours at work makes it inevitable for the employer or the employees to display their emotions. These affective expressions can be both, positive or negative. The most common negative emotions at a workplace can be stress, frustration, worry, anxiety, insecurity, anger or feeling down. The negative emotions may root from an overburdened employee, bullying behavior, being snubbed, poor performance, inability to meet deadlines, criticism, sarcastic comments and an uncomfortable environment. Positive emotions are also a part of one’s occupational life. An appreciated employee can show signs of satisfactory psychological health and better job performance. A comfortable and uplifting work environment can induce a sense of belongingness and the feeling of being wanted amongst the employees. Employers, nowadays, focus on creating a homely environment so the workers can build strong relationships, complete group tasks, and show trust and collaboration.
