Impact of Play Therapy on Developmental Outcomes for Kids with Autism

Essay Instructions:

Complete a Journal Article Review (JAR2). The article you choose to review, will, ideally, contribute to the selection and development of your final paper topic. Locate ONE qualitative journal article related to counselling from scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles (published within the last 10 years) available online.

Note: Meta-analysis, Systematic review, Pilot studies, Mixed methods, Case studies, and Single-subject case studies are not permitted.

The research method, data analysis, and results should be clearly discussed.

For JAR2, the research design must be qualitative and utilize a formal qualitative methodology (e.g., grounded theory, phenomenological, ethnographic). Qualitative research design is inductive in its reasoning. It is a systematic subjective approach used to describe life experiences and to give these life experiences meaning. The goals of a qualitative researcher are to gain insight and to explore the depth, richness, and complexity inherent in the phenomenon under study. The final report for a qualitative study is a narrative report with contextual description & direct quotations from research participants. A study that simply asks open-ended questions and reports the results will not meet the requirements for this assignment.

As you choose the article, please send it so I can send it to my professor to approve so we don't make the same mistake as last time.

Make sure the article is peer-reviewed and is a "qualitative" one

Statement of Problem

The authors argue that a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) struggles with the dimensions of social interactions, expression, nonverbal information-sharing capabilities, and repetitive behavioral tendencies. Autistic children show social interaction issues, social nervousness, as well as communication issues, making them avoid social interactions. This makes the children show undesirable interactions in the community as they grow. The authors recognized a research gap in the efficacy of existing therapeutic practices in reducing or helping address the aforementioned functional limitations. There is a need to shift from traditional therapy techniques that are typically dull for children with autism and embrace play therapy. Although the research question is not explicitly defined, the authors tried to investigate the impact of therapeutic play activities on the functional abilities of children with autism. The need to conduct this research was to establish the effect of entertainment activities on the cognitive, social, physical, self-care, emotional, and mental competencies of ASD kids.

Literature Review

This qualitative study draws from recent studies on the efficacy of play therapy in addressing developmental challenges for children with autism. Schottelkorb et al. (2020) sought to establish whether intensive child-based play therapy effectively addressed ASD symptoms in children. They found that participation in child-based play
