Humanistic Perspective vs Positive Approach
I believe that humanistic psychology is criticized for describing humans more positively than the facts warrant because it espouses positive views of human nature and growth motivations. These positive latent facets of human nature and the actualization of these aspects (humanistic theory) are often unverifiable or vague. They may therefore appear as a triumph of wish over fact (Friedman & Brown, 2018). However, I do not think that this concern for positive growth, instead of pathology, is wholly unrealistic in its positivity; rather, I consider it holistic of the human condition and necessary to understanding human behavior. Moreover, I do not consider humanistic psychology to depreciate the positive contributions of other schools of thought. I think that it addresses certain ranges of functioning that psychoanalysis and behaviorism ignore.
