HOW DIVERSITY IMPACTS FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY AND THE LAW

Essay Instructions:
Appreciating how diversity impacts individuals is an ethical obligation for forensic psychology professionals. Diversity includes a broad number of topics, including—but not limited to—race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, language, physical ability, social economic status, geographical location, political beliefs, religion, and culture. For this Discussion, you will identify and select a recent criminal case from the local news (e.g., newspaper article or television report, etc.) and consider how diversity may have impacted the case, or how it might impact the case in the future. For example, if you chose to review a criminal case from your local news about a young woman who was raped and the suspect is unknown, you could discuss how the victim’s race, gender, and age may impact a jury’s impression of her and the veracity of her testimony. Or you might consider how her socio-economic status impacts her opportunity to receive mental health and medical treatments. Likewise, you could also explore how her religion may impact how she copes with the trauma. Review this week’s Learning Resources to deepen your understanding of how diversity impacts forensic psychology and the law. Impact of Diversity on Forensic Psychology and the Law Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Course Name and Number Instructor Name Due Date Impact of Diversity on Forensic Psychology and the Law In March 2024, a 17-year-old Hispanic male was taken into custody by members of the Dover Police Department after stealing a vehicle and subsequently being involved in numerous crashes. The youth took the Dodge Ram from Commerce Way before driving across town (Staff Writer, 2024). He was also involved in a second collision involving a parked car at the Town Pointe apartment complex before the one at Verizon. The teenager demolished a structure and recked a vehicle, as well as injuring another driver. Police attempted to take the 17-year-old to jail, but he resisted. However, following a brief struggle, the officers succeeded in apprehending him (Staff Writer, 2024). Dover police booked the kid for resisting arrest, reckless driving, leaving the scene, theft of an automobile, driving without a license, and failure to comply with traffic signals. Several characteristics of diversity may influence the 17-year-old instance. For example, the teenager's Hispanic ethnicity may impact both the jury's impression and the media's image of him. Racial bias in the judicial system has been demonstrated to influence pretrial results both directly and indirectly. According to Bjornstrom et al. (2010), mock juries are more likely to convict minority offenders and impose harsher punishments than their white counterparts. Furthermore, the defendant's age might influence how his case is handled and resolved. Jurors may depend on group preconceptions to explain or anticipate conduct, especially in the absence of solid e...
