The core function of the endocrine system is to secrete hormones that travel through the bloodstream and reach the target organ to control their function. Using these hormones, the endocrine system controls several crucial human body features, including metabolism, growth and development, sexual maturity, and blood circulation (Ashwell, 2022). Hyperthyroidism Hyperthyroidism is a specific disorder of the endocrine system that is characterized by unnecessarily higher production of thyroid hormones from an endocrine gland called the thyroid due to an overactive thyroid gland. Since thyroid hormones control body metabolism, hyperthyroidism causes a negative increase in the body’s metabolism, characterized by abnormalities such as weight loss, excessive hunger, hand tremors, and rapid and irregular heartbeat (Endocrine Disorders, 2015). Underlying Causes and Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism Since hyperthyroidism causes rapid metabolism, it increases the energy production of the body; it may cause symptoms such as tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and palpitation (pounding of heartbeat) (Mayo Clinic, 2022). At the psychological level, symptoms of hyperthyroidism may manifest itself in the form of unreasonable nervousness, anxiety, and irritability.
