Two Key Roles in Civil and Family Law
There are many roles that forensic psychology experts can perform in civil litigation and family law. The first is that they may serve as custody evaluators. Child custody evaluators evaluate families involved in contested child custody cases in order to make recommendations to the courts based on his/her psychological evaluations. They interview parents, children and other parties involved, review documents, and observe family dynamics. Their findings impact court determinations of custody schedules, visitation, and co-parenting. Secondly, they can be a personal injury expert witness. Forensic psychologists serving as expert witnesses in civil (personal injury or employment discrimination) cases assess plaintiffs for psychological harm (Bartol & Bartol, 2022). They conduct clinical interviews, psychological tests and reports that outline the effects of what happens on mental health.
