Concerns or Criticisms of Applied Behavior Analysis
Lack of Cultural Competence and Responsiveness
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been criticized for not incorporating cultural competency into its practices adequately. In other words, interventions may need to take into account clients' cultural backgrounds and contexts, resulting in an ineffective or even harmful approach (Van-Houten et al., 1988).
Overemphasis on Compliance and Behavior Control
Another core critique is that ABA is overly preoccupied with compliance and behavior control rather than the underlying issues that cause people to act out in such behaviors. The approach risks leading to very rigid and punitive interventions that are oriented toward immediate changes in behavior and not authentically focused on long-term well-being (Leaf et al., 2022).
Ethical Concerns and Client Autonomy
The ethical concerns mainly reside in the extent to which a voice is given to the clients themselves, notably children, within the treatment plan for ABA practices. It has been noticed that critics indicate how power dynamics between therapists and clients often interfere with interventions that should be the key to practitioners' or caregivers' goals, not clients' preferences and consent (Conners et al., 2019).
