Considerations for Punishment and Extinction Interventions
Punishment procedures, such as reprimands, overcorrection, time-out, and response cost are commonly used in applied behavior analysis. While these methods can be effective in reducing undesired behaviors, these procedures also carry the risk of emotional and elicited effects. It is essential to approach the use of punishment with a complete understanding of its potential benefits and risks, as well as the ethical considerations involved with implementing punishment procedures. Additionally, considering extinction from a compassionate care perspective is critical in our practice.
For this discussion, you will provide an argument on the use of punishment that is grounded in the readings provided in this unit. Based on the scenario, you will either present an argument FOR the use of punishment/extinction, or AGAINST the use of punishment/extinction procedures. To ensure that both sides of the argument are addressed, adhere to the following:
Last names that start with the letters A through M will present FOR the use of punishment.
Last names that start with the letters N through Z will present AGAINST the use of punishment.
It is important to understand both sides of the argument, as you will be responding to peers who present an opposing viewpoint.
Your argument should include the following considerations:
Pro-punishment Argument:
Provide examples of punishment and discuss the benefits and appropriate use of the punishment procedures.
Evaluate the ethical considerations of punishment procedures and provide guidelines for ethical practice as supported by the BACB’s Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts.
Present an argument for the appropriate use of extinction procedures.
Anti-punishment Argument:
Provide examples of punishment and provide a justification against the use of punishment procedures.
Evaluate the ethical considerations of punishment procedures and provide guidelines for ethical practice as supported by the BACB’s Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts.
Present an argument for the use of extinction from the perspective of compassionate care.

Over the years, there has been a discussion about whether punishment should be used to control behavior. Different research shows that if punishment is implemented ethically and appropriately, it could be used in applied behavior analysis (ABA) to suppress harmful and disruptive behaviors. Even though behavior analysts should prioritize reinforcement, they could also apply punishment to offer an intervention where self-injurious or harmful behaviors persist despite reinforcement efforts.
For instance, a behavior analyst can use response cost, a form of negative punishment, to reduce aggressive behaviors in a classroom setting. For instance, they could remove an item that a student prefers after a student engages in a disruptive behavior. This approach could reduce the likelihood of recurrence of a behavior. On the other hand, they could use overcorrection, such as requiring a child who scribbles on a desk to clean multiple desks. This approach could teach the student...
