Pregnancy plays an important role in any period and culture. Pregnancy is also often a subject taken lightly in many cultures with some individuals considering it just a mere occurrence. However, that I not the case in the Chinese culture (You et al., 2021). In traditional Chinese culture, pregnancy is instructed by ideas related to balance, health, and the natural world, which gives rise to customs and practices useful for the well-being of the mother and the child. In this paper, the analysis will take a closer look at the cultural attitudes and practices related to pregnancy in traditional Chinese culture. The analysis accommodates the perceptions and treatment of pregnant women, beliefs concerning biological processes, perceptions about the developing fetus, preparation for birth, and waiting for parenthood. The findings of the analysis should help to see how pregnancy experiences and other behavioral patterns are influenced due to cultural beliefs and perceptions within the context of traditional Chinese cultural perspectives. Cultural Views of Pregnant Women In traditional Chinese culture, the cultural view of women must inform the perspectives of pregnancies. In traditional Chinese culture, pregnancy is considered a very sacred and significant event. It is an event that affects not only the woman herself but also her family and community (Zhang, Liu, & Li, 2025). The pregnant woman is seen as strong but weak as she is carrying life. Pregnant women are treated with a lot of respect and more care on account of being pregnant. This cultural respect is shown in their customs when it comes to her comfort and health. The pregnant woman is not made to do heavy work. They provide her with hearty food and see to it that she takes rest (Berger, 2022). Also, traditional Chinese beliefs stress “yin and yang,” which means opposite but equal forces. In the context of pregnancies, the concept implies that the woman must maintain a proper balance of these forces so that she can have a healthy pregnancy (Zhang, Liu, & Li, 2025). For example, complications could arise if there is exposure to excess cold or heat in the body of a pregnant woman. As such, pregnant women are often advised to refrain from eating cold food items, for instance, ice or raw vegetables that are believed to be disruptive to their yang. Further, they may be encouraged to consume warm foods along with easily digestible foods that are thought to nourish both the mother as well as the fetus. In the same way, "Yang Sheng" in Chinese medicine is the treatment of pregnant women which means "nurturing life" (Zhang, Liu, & Li, 2025). This philosophy is important for the health of the mother and fetus. (You et al., 2021). Pregnant women are often advised to take things easy, rest up, avoid hard work, and eat nutritious food. From both the cultural and philosophical lenses, the Chinese traditional culture treats pregnant women with respect and accords them the opportunity to stay healthy.
