Professionals in various roles within the field of clinical psychology, work with individuals that are diverse in culture, socioeconomic status, physical and developmental ability, and more. An important part of overall competence in the field is cultural competence.
For this discussion, you may write about a culture or subgroup you already know. Alternatively, you may choose a culture that interests you. Conduct research on that group, and base your main post on what you have learned about that group. The information you present must be backed up with scholarly or peer-reviewed resources to support your responses.
Please do your best to avoid the use of language that is based on common misconceptions, stereotypes, or language that could be viewed as offensive to a specific group. Please be respectful of other people's views.

Cultural competence is an integral part of good clinical psychology practice, especially for clinical psychology practice with Asian Americans whose values, beliefs, and mental health are distinctly different. Research shows that Asian Americans are more likely than any other ethnic group to experience high levels of psychological distress but are less likely than all other ethnic groups to use services (Karasz, 2019). There are several cultural factors influencing treatment for mental health among Asian American groups. The idea of 'saving face' and keeping up family honor can lead people to resist getting mental health help because mental illness might embarrass the family. The traditional discrepant values, such as emotional restraint and harmony in the group, may clash with Western therapeutic approaches where individual expression and autonomy are the focus.
