Analyze ethical and legal responsibilities as they relate to boundaries of competence. As you begin this assignment, take a moment to stop and reflect on the difference between professional ethics and legal responsibilities. In this assignment you will discuss responsibilities in both areas, so this is a helpful starting point. You will analyze both ethical and legal responsibilities, as they apply specifically to the area of boundaries of competence. Review the case scenarios carefully (see below), then choose one to discuss for this assignment. In a 2-3-page expository paper, analyze ethical and legal responsibilities related to the case you chose. This should be based on course materials, your own research, and at least two of the codes of ethics in the field of psychology. Address the following for the chosen case: Describe (do not directly quote) at least two ethical standards (from two different ethics codes), specific to the area of boundaries of competence, that provide direction for the case. Explain why that particular standard is applicable in the case. Be sure to discuss individual standards within the codes of ethics, not general principles, and cite the applicable code of ethics. Explain how the professional could ensure that each standard identified is being upheld, by providing at least one example for each standard. Next, analyze how legal responsibilities apply to the case. This should be based on the supplemental reading in the course. The paper should include support from the textbook, two separate codes of ethics, and at least one additional scholarly source. Alyssa has completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology in addictions, and has been working as a case manager. Recently Alyssa also began an internship to work toward becoming a certified addiction counselor. While conducting an intake interview with a new client who has been court-ordered to the facility, the client responds to a standard question that they are homicidal. Alyssa first inquires whether the client understands the meaning of the word homicidal. The client replies, “I wish I had a bullet for that cop that arrested me.” Jakob has been a psychiatric technician for about a year, but has been working in the field of psychology for about 10 years in various other positions. Jakob’s undergraduate degree is in ABA, which included quite a bit of study regarding individuals with developmental disabilities. A new client has been exhibiting symptoms that appear to be related to autism spectrum disorder. Jakob feels that there is enough information to indicate the client should be evaluated further. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://kapextmediassl-a(dot)akamaihd(dot)net/artsSCi/PS380/2301C/PS380_LegalResponsibilities.pdf https://www(dot)apa(dot)org/ethics/code chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www(dot)bacb(dot)com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Ethics-Code-for-Behavior-Analysts-240830-a.pdf https://www(dot)apa(dot)org/ethics/code/standard-304 chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://ccmcertification(dot)org/sites/ccmc/files/docs/2018/ccmc-18-code-of-conduct_1.pdf chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www(dot)naadac(dot)org/assets/2416/naadac_code_of_ethics_112021.pdf

Ethical and Legal Responsibilities: Boundaries of Competence Name Affiliation Course Name & Course Number Instructor Due Date Ethical and Legal Responsibilities: Boundaries of Competence During an internship, Alyssa completed a court-ordered intake interview where a new client admitted feeling homicidal when answering a standard question. Given that she had just finished her bachelor’s degree in psychology and was on an internship, it was essential for her to consider her ethical and legal obligations as determined by her boundary of competence. Ethical responsibilities are related to the guidelines that guides one’s professional practice, while legal responsibilities describes that course of action that are prescribed in the law (Chiles & Roberts, 2018). This analysis examines how Alyssa should handle the client’s admission of homicidal ideation given her boundaries of competence. Ethical Standards Alyssa has an ethical obligation to refer the new client to a more experienced psychologist as detailed in APA Ethical Standard 2.01. The ethical standard guides that a psychologists should make sure to provide services that are within their area of training and supervised experience (APA, 2017). In the case, it is essential that the new client is handled by a psychologist who is adequately trained on how to assess and deal with homicidal ideation in clients. Though the client expresses that he would have used a gun to murder the police who arrested him to Alyssa, it is challenging for her to confirm the diagnosis as she is not fully aware of all the key considerations that a psychologist must consider before declaring that a client has homicidal ideations. Thus, Alyssa must recognize the limits of her competence and immediately consult her supervisors for directions on how to deal with the client’s disclosure.
