A key idea in psychology is self-efficacy, especially regarding motivation and behavioral change. In the 1970s, Albert Bandura proposed it as a component of his Social Cognitive Theory. Self-efficacy is the conviction that one can carry out a task or accomplish a specific objective. It is self-assurance in one's ability to manage a person's sources of inspiration, practices, and social environments. These psychological self-evaluations impact every aspect of the human experience, including the objectives pursued, the effort used to achieve these objectives, and the probability of achieving particular levels of behavioral success (Cervone & Scott, 2021). In contrast to conventional psychology theories, self-efficacy beliefs are anticipated to change according to the context of operation and the conditions in which an action takes place. The study examines the idea of self-efficacy concerning a specific behavior of quitting smoking and a target group of smokers to better comprehend it in the context of behavioral change.
Smoking is a well-known habit to have negative effects on health. Since it frequently entails altering the social and psychological aspects of smoking and overcoming a physical addiction to nicotine, giving up smoking is a difficult behavioral change (Zentner & Borland, 2019). Additionally, smokers are the group that needs to adjust their behavior in this situation. They are people who smoke frequently and may be motivated to stop for a variety of personal, societal, or health-related reasons. Smoking self-efficacy, or confidence in one's ability to abstain from smoking in high-risk situations, is a key sign of a program's effectiveness. Through mastery experiences, people attempting to stop smoking can boost their self-efficacy. Their confidence may increase if they overcome the impulse to smoke, even under trying circumstances. For example, if a smoker successfully abstains from smoking for a day, they might begin to have faith in their capacity to stop completely (Orsal & Ergun, 2021). Self-efficacy and mastery experiences are mutually dependent daily within the smoking cessation process. The effects of mastery experiences disappear quickly, suggesting that ongoing achievement is necessary to maintain self-efficacy.
