Essay Instructions:
Case Study Directions: Read the scenario below and address the following questions in a essay response using APA style (use APA resources for help). Case Study: Samantha is a 26 year-old woman; she is expecting her first baby. She has been married to Dave for almost two years and works full time as an accountant. She really loves her job as an accountant, but also wants to give their child the best possible start in life, even before he/she is born. She and her husband, Dave, come to you, a child-development specialist, for professional advice on a few topics. In this assignment, you will be giving your best advice based on what you have read in module on infancy. You will want to assure them that you are using empirical data and research to share these ‘best practices’ with them so make sure you cite the textbook when you use material from the text. Using APA format, you will provide the in-text citation. Samantha asks you “What constitutes “good” prenatal care?” Give her advice on how she can maintain her best mental and physical well-being at this time; including information on whether or not it is safe to exercise and, if so, what types of exercise should be avoided, if any. (3 points) Samantha would like to make an informed decision about whether or not to continue smoking cigarettes while pregnant. What do researchers know about the risks of maternal smoking on a developing fetus? What are risks to the baby after he/she is born? (4 points) As a child-development specialist, what advice can you provide to Samantha and Dave to prevent SIDS? (3 points) Samantha and her husband are first-time parents. They are both a bit nervous about choosing the ‘right’ daycare for the baby after Samantha’s maternity leave is over. Dave said he does not have paternity leave at work so they will have to choose daycare unless Samantha stays home. Name the advantages and disadvantages of sending a child to daycare. What are advantages and potential challenges of Samantha staying home with their child? (5 points) Lastly, Samantha shares with you that her husband, Dave, has a bit of a temper. He sometimes sulks and/or has angry outbursts; Dave shares with you that Samantha is overly sensitive and is prone to crying ‘for no reason’. They are both concerned about their baby’s temperament. What can you share with them about how temperament is developed? Is a person born with his/her temperament and, if so, what are some environmental influences on one’s temperament? Make sure you share the three basic types of temperament researched by Chess and Thomas (1977). Give your best advice to these parents to ease their concerns. (5 points)

Samantha’s Case and Pre-Natal Care Your Name Subject and Section Professor’s Name February 13, 2024 Good Prenatal Care Parents should always consider the importance of prenatal care. Prenatal care is paramount for the well-being of both the mother and the developing fetus, especially as this helps protect both her and her child’s mental and physical health during this time. Based on experience, as well as clinical findings, this must come from emotional support from family and friends, coupled with stress management techniques, to boost her mental well-being throughout the duration of the pregnancy. Accordingly, studies such as those done by Traylor et al. (2020) show that engaging in activities that reduce stress, such as prenatal yoga or mindfulness exercises, is beneficial. On the other hand, maintaining physical well-being involves proper nutrition and safe exercise. Given Samantha's case, she should focus on building a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, coupled with safe and secure exercise routines such as walking and swimming (Szumilewicz et al., 2022). Risks of Maternal Smoking Another risk factor that should be considered is smoking during pregnancy. Despite common knowledge about its risks, research indicates that maternal smoking poses significant risks to fetal development, including preterm birth and low birth weight (Odendaal et al., 2020). Additionally, this same span of research studies has shown that developing fetuses may also face developmental issues. After birth, the baby is at an increased risk of respiratory issues and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Therefore, it is strongly advised for Samantha to quit smoking during her pregnancy for the health of both herself and the baby. Preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome If there’s another thing to consider it’s the possibility of Sudden Infa...
