Case Study: Samantha is a 26 year-old woman; she is expecting her first baby. She has been married to Dave for almost two years and works full time as an accountant. She really loves her job as an accountant, but also wants to give their child the best possible start in life, even before he/she is born. She and her husband, Dave, come to you, a child-development specialist, for professional advice on a few topics. In this assignment, you will be giving your best advice based on what you have read in module on infancy. You will want to assure them that you are using empirical data and research to share these ‘best practices’ with them so make sure you cite the textbook when you use material from the text. Using APA format, you will provide the in-text citation.

Good Prenatal Care
Parents should always consider the importance of prenatal care. Prenatal care is paramount for the well-being of both the mother and the developing fetus, especially as this helps protect both her and her child’s mental and physical health during this time. Based on experience, as well as clinical findings, this must come from emotional support from family and friends, coupled with stress management techniques, to boost her mental well-being throughout the duration of the pregnancy. Accordingly, studies such as those done by Traylor et al. (2020) show that engaging in activities that reduce stress, such as prenatal yoga or mindfulness exercises, is beneficial.
On the other hand, maintaining physical well-being involves proper nutrition and safe exercise. Given Samantha's case, she should focus on building a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, coupled with safe and secure exercise routines such as walking and swimming (Szumilewicz et al., 2022).
Risks of Maternal Smoking
Another risk factor that should be considered is smoking during pregnancy. Despite common knowledge about its risks, research indicates that maternal smoking poses significant risks to fetal development, including preterm birth and low birth weight (Odendaal et al., 2020). Additionally, this same span of research studies has shown that developing fetuses may also face developmental issues. After birth, the baby is at an increased risk of respiratory issues and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Therefore, it is strongly advised for Samantha to quit smoking during her pregnancy for the health of both herself and the baby.
