Whether or not children younger than five can conserve has been a point of debate among psychologists and researchers. Jean Piaget argued that Children below seven may not have the capacity to conceptualize the conservation idea due to their learning ability (Babakr, et al., 2019). According to the psychologist, these children cannot comprehend the changes in their minds. Their evaluation and thinking are also interrupted by a change. It is worth noting that a child who can conserve can reverse the aesthetic transformation mentally and acknowledge compensation. This may occur in children below five. Piaget’s Concept of Conservation Piaget’s conservation concept refers to a child’s understanding that the properties of objects such as volume, mass, and quantity do not change even if their appearances are altered (Watanabe, 2022). This cognitive ability depends on the age of a child. For example, children who can conserve understand that pouring one liter of water from a wide glass to a thin glass does not alter the amount of the quantity of water. However, those who do not have this ability may think that the same task increases the amount of water because the water level increases in the thin glass. According to Piaget, the ability to conserve occurs in children aged 7-11 (Watanabe, 2022). This age bracket is characterized by increasingly advanced reasoning and problem-solving skills. These children are more coherent and refined in their thinking. They can think logically about specific problems related to physical objects. More importantly, they can quickly understand that something stays the same in quantity despite changing its appearance. The children can realize that a candy bar is still the same amount even if it is broken into smaller pieces.
