The Biopsychosocial model comprehensively helps to understand various illnesses, including mental health disorders such as Bipolar Disorder (BD). The model applies biological, psychological, and social factors. It includes how the factors interact to aid in comprehending human health and illnesses (Sadigh, 2013). The essay will apply the Biopsychosocial model to BD and including the factors that are associated with the disorder.
Biological Factors
There are several biological factors associated with BD. These factors are physiological and include aspects such as genetic predisposition, brain chemistry differences, and the function of the brain and the nervous system (YouTube, 2020). According to Gordovez and McMahon (2020), BD is strongly linked to genetics, where people with a family history of BD are more likely to get the disorder than people who have no family history of BD. Another biological factor is the structure and function of the brain. People with BD have evident structural abnormalities in the brain. Kapczinski et al. (2017) assert that these abnormalities can be observed in selected areas of the brain of BD patients. Brain abnormalities significantly lead to mood imbalances. Another biological factor associated with BD is neurotransmitter function abnormalities. People with BD have an imbalance in their neurochemicals, including neurotransmitter function abnormalities (Vieta et al., 2018). These lead to mood dysregulation. Therefore, people with BD may experience depressive episodes and manic, which are caused by neurotransmitter fluctuation.
Psychological Factors
There are several psychological factors associated with BD. These factors are linked to mental processes such as individual perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and ways of thought (YouTube, 2020). An example of a psychological factor associated with BD is life experiences and stress. For instance, extreme stress or trauma and significant life experiences can affect mood. To effectively manage BD, stress-managing methods and coping strategies are essential. Another psychological factor is cognitive abnormalities, involving cognitive distortions and negative thoughts.
