Purpose:
The development of behavior skills, social skills, cognitive skills, and sensory-motor skills are important pieces of a typical early childhood environment. Encouraging the growth of these necessary skills in our young children with ASD is an important step in their development.
Scenario: ASD Case Study: Molly
Molly is a 4-year-old preschool child with ASD and significant expressive and receptive language deficits. She seldom uses her language spontaneously to communicate with peers and teachers. She has a difficult time following directions and transitioning from one activity to the next. Molly is very fearful of social situations and often avoids social interactions. Molly spends the vast majority of her time on the playground alone with little peer interaction. Molly engages in stereotypical behaviors such as hand flapping, vocalizations, and eye gazing. She has been noted to slap herself in the head and has recently begun slapping parents and teachers. Molly is noted to have a short attention span, poor motor coordination, difficulty tying her shoes and managing snaps and buttons, and sensory-seeking needs.

Introduction
Molly is a 4-year-old preschool child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and has a delay in the use of spoken language. Her deficits include the inability to engage in unscripted discourse appropriately, compliance with instructions, and shift from one task to another. Molly is very anxious in social situations, has various autistic mannerisms, including hand flapping and self-harming, and has poor motor skills and may seek out touches and hugs. The case of Molly will explore various techniques for how behavior, social/emotional, cognitive, and sensory-motor development could be enhanced in early childhood settings.
Addressing Molly's Needs in the Early Childhood Environment
Behavioral Issues
Molly’s behavior problems can be managed through positive behavior and academic programs by establishing a structured environment for learning, encouraging appropriate behaviors, and implementing functional behavioral assessments (Edelson, 2022). The Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (A-B-C) Model identifies the antecedents that cue Molly's behaviors and the consequences that maintain them (Sevin et al., 2015, pp. 331-336). For example, when Molly slaps her head after she has been asked to do something and the head slap happens after the demand, it may be seen as her way of avoiding this demand. This learning strategy involves giving rewards like verbal encouragement, toys, and others immediately after Molly has complied with instructions without having self-injurious behaviors (Sevin et al., 2015, pp. 331-336)
Environmental Support Behavioral Improvement
Developing an exclusive “Calm Down Corner” in the classroom will enable her to assist Molly when stressed or overwhelmed with tasks. This space should have a comforting feel with such items as soft pillows, weighted blankets, and sensory toys that will help her calm down and get back to being ready for classroom activities. This will help Molly to learn how to manage herself and decrease negative behaviors (Thompson, 2021).
Social and Emotional Skills
