Online Shopping during COVID-19
Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic has had immense changes in many facets of human existence. The shopping experience has been impacted significantly with customers expected to attune to social distancing if they are to flatten the curve on the pandemic. The United Nations Conference on Trade Development (2020) decided to survey in October 2020 to ascertain the impact of COVID-19 on e-commerce. They collaborated with Netcomm Suisse eCommerce Association and the Brazilian Network Information Center (BNIC) to determine the gravity of the situation. The survey covered different demographics including Turkey, Switzerland, South Africa, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Korea, Italy, Germany, China, and Brazil.
The Methodology of Data Collection
The survey utilized the input of approximately 3,700 customers who were from nine emerging and developed countries. These individuals were to state their frequency in the use of an online mechanism to process a transaction whether it is making an order or paying for one. The emergence of the virus, with credible reports stating China as the source, and the threat it poses to people must have a significant impact on the use of e-commerce and digital solutions (Hua & Shaw, 2020).
Analysis of Data
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the globe was shifting towards a more digital world implying that the virus accelerated this path. This change has influenced online purchases including but not limited to personal care (cosmetics) categories, furniture (household) products, education, pharmaceuticals, gardening, and electronics. Besides, the level of monthly expenditure dedicated to these commodities must have experienced some impact from the spread of the virus. Therefore, there is a need to address the issue of online purchases and consumer expenditure as primary events that are central to these changes.
