Integers in the Real World

Connecting Integers to Finances

Imagine that you have graduated and obtained your ideal job! This project will help you connect what you have learned about integers to personal finances.

In this project, you will:

Learn to describe income using an equation.

Learn to evaluate your income based on given hours per week or a goal amount of money.

Learn to make reasonable conclusions about finances.

Connect the idea of positive and negative integers to credits and debits within accounts.

To complete this project you will:

Complete the Ideal Job Worksheet to guide you in developing your budget. Be sure to show all work!

Complete a 2-page, double-spaced, APA formatted report. In the report, you need to present your findings and explain the connections between your calculations and integers. Thoughts to include in the report include: What types of transactions are positive or negative? How can you write an expression to determine your income? How can you write an equation to solve the number of hours you need to work or the amount of money you need to make to reach your financial goals.

You have landed your ideal job!
In this worksheet you will need to answer each question fully and showing all work. Then use your findings to write your 2 page report on your findings.
1 Research jobs using your degree and identify a job you would be interested. Use a website like Glassdoor.com to determine the salary for the job you are interested in. Then Find out what the hourly pay amount based on what is given. Be sure to cite your source in the worksheet and in your report.
Answer: My desired job is in the Accounting profession, preferably based in the United States. According to Indeed.com, the average annual salary of an accountant in the United States is $55,914 which translates to $4,660 per month (55,914/12).
With an eight-hour per day work schedule, a five-day working week and four weeks in a month, the total work hours in a month are: 8*5*4= 160 hours.
Hourly pay amount: 4,660/160= $29.
2 Write an equation to express how much money you would make if you worked h hours. Where I equals income:
Answer: I= 29h
3 Would you consider your income to be a positive or a negative integer? Why?
Answer: My income is a positive integer because it is a product (result of multiplication) of two positive integers that is, 29 & h and lies on the right side of zero on the number line.
4 How many hours would you need to work to earn $400 per week (assume overtime is paid at the regular hourly rate)? Answer: Weekly income = No. of hrs of work in a week* Regular Hourly Rate
Let h be the number of hours of work in a week
So, $400= h*29
Therefore, h= 400/29
= 13.7931
≈ 14 hours
5 Now let’s assume that your car is currently paid off but you have to pay gas and budget for driving to and from your new job. Find out the local gas price and write an equation to describe the price of gas for g gallons. Where M is the amount of money you spend on gas each week. Estimate the mileage to your new job each week and explain what the weekly gas cost would be for your budget.
Answer: The expected average price per gallon of gas in the United States in 2020 is $3.For g gallons of gas, the price would be: 3g (3*g).
So, P=3g, where P is the price for g gallons.
Assuming a distance of 44 miles from my house to my work place, that translates to 88 miles to and fro on daily basis.
Weekly distance covered= mileage per day* number of work days in a week
=44*2*5
=440 miles every week
My car’s consumption is twenty-two (22) miles per gallon (mpg). This translates to 20 gallons for 440 miles.
Therefore, M= 20*3
= $60
Assuming that I use my car every day to work and back home, I have to budget for a consumption of 20 gallons of gas every week. The total weekly gas cost budget would be $60.
6 Would the gas cost be considered a positive or a negative integer? Why?
Answer: The gas cost represents a negative integer because it represents a reduction or decrease in the amount of money that I have in my account.
7 Write an expression that calculates your weekly balance in your account based on a 40 hour work week and accounting for the gas amount. Show integers as positive or negative.Answer;Assuming a 40 hour week and an hourly pay of p dollars, weekly income= 40*p =40p
The weekly cost of gas as calculated in Answer No.6 is $60.
Therefore, the expression for weekly balance in my account and accounting for the gas amount is; 40p-60.
40p represents a positive integer (weekly income) while 60, which is the cost of gas, is a negative integer showing a reduction of income due to incurrence of the cost of gas.
8 Now determine your monthly gas cost for your trip to work. To do this assume there are 4 weeks in ...
