For me, DSV Panalpina provided the most comprehensive sustainability report. Indeed, the company is the only one that provides substantial comparable data in its report. When it talks about employee gender ratio, rates of occupational accidents, or CO2 emissions, it shows graphs with information from five different years (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019) so you can track its improvements. Although a comparison between DVS Panalpina and its competitors would be helpful to fully understand its sustainability effort, readers perceive the company as transparent and are likely to trust it more. In contrast, ExxonMobil mentions random numbers all over the report, while Iron Mountain only offered a comparison of 2017-2018 CO2 emissions and renewable energy data and shared a few and non-comparable numbers about gender pay gap and turnover of permanent employees.



I’ve learned something from reading tons of organizations’ sustainability reports. If companies that don’t show graphs (at all or on a specific issue), they probably want to hide you something. And that is where you need to read the text more carefully. They do so because, typically, people are too lazy to check previous reports and compare the numbers or to carefully read a long and boring text. In this regard, I would like to underline that DSV Panalpina’s sustainability report is the shortest – 34 pages compared to the 40 pages of ExxonMobil and 64 of Iron Mountain. In other words, this is the perfect example of how length doesn’t really matter if you do a good job.
