Apple Inc. Diversity and Inclusion SWOT Analysis
Section I: Overview of the Company
Apple Inc. is an American multinational company that offers software, hardware and digital services. It was established in 1977 and it is headquartered in California. Its current chief executive officer (CEO) is Tim Cook, who took that leadership position in 2011 (Apple Inc. Leadership, n.d.).
Purpose
Apple’s purpose is to “design, manufacture, and market mobile communication and media devices and personal computers and sells a variety of related software, services, accessories and third-party digital content and applications (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), 2018). It serves a wide range of customers including large enterprises, government, and small-scale consumers.
Mission/Vision
Apple does not have a clearly stated vision and mission statement on its company website. However, there is a statement in its annual reports, as part of its business strategy, which qualifies as a mission statement. Apple is “committed to bringing the best user experience to its customers through its innovative hardware, software, and services (SEC), 2018).” This mission indicates that Apple’s focus is on its customers and it is ready to utilize all the resources at its disposal to improve its core offering and meet the customers’ needs as they arise. This mission is supported by Apple’s core values which include accessibility, education, privacy, supplier responsibility, environment, and inclusion and diversity (Apple Inc., n.d.). All these values focus on enhancing customers’ experience by empowering suppliers and employees.
Products and Services
Apple offers many products and services to its customers. The main product offerings are iPhones, which are smartphones that use Apple’s operating system (SEC, 2018). Different iPhones offer different features. The second product offerings are iPads, which are tablets that also use Apple’s operating system, iOS. Apple also offers Mac, which is a line of both portable personal computers and desktops. Also, the company offers operating systems for its Apple Watch and TV.
Apple offers digital services and content. These allow Apple customers to purchase or stream TV shows and music as well as download podcasts. Other digital content offered include games, apps, and e-books. There is also the cloud storage service offered through Apple’s iCloud. Apple customers can store their files, music, and photos in the 5GB free iCloud storage that’s built-in every phone (Apple Inc., iCloud, n.d.). Apple also offers cashless payment services through its ApplePay services (SEC, 2018). This service, however, is not available in every country that has access to Apple products.
Section II: Overview of their D&I Initiatives
Diversity-related Initiatives directed toward Employees
Apple has not listed the head of diversity in its leadership profile, nor has it listed the managers of diversity on the inclusion and diversity page on its company’s website. However, Christie Smith indicates in her linked profile that she is the vice president of Inclusion and Diversity at Apple since November 2017 (LinkedIn, n.d.). Diversity at Apple is managed through the human resources department which is responsible for attracting and hiring diverse candidates, especially women and underrepresented communities (Apple Inc. Inclusion and Diversity, n.d.). Apple has a website link for diversity and inclusion, /diversity/. This link redirects to Apple’s diversity webpage with a statement that reads “Different together.” To enhance diversity and inclusion, Apple has improved its HR policies to ensure that people from minority groups, such as women, Native Americans, and Blacks, among others, are well represented as part of Apple’s diverse workforce. Apple has several diversity network associations that provide Apple employees with a platform to connect and share their cultures. Part of their diversity and inclusion efforts includes advocating for equal pay, not only in the U.S. but also in other countries where Apple has a base of operations. This equal pay advocacy is aimed at ensuring that women and underrepresented groups get paid the same as other employees for the same work. As a result, Apple was ranked among the top companies in the technology industry that have promoted equal pay by Arjuna Capital’s Gender Pay Scorecard (Apple Inc. Inclusion and Diversity, n.d.). Apple also hires U.S. veterans and advocates for the rights of the LGBTQ community. Apple has been able to increase the percentage of underrepresented hires from 21% in 2014 to 31% in 2018, and the number is expected to increase.
