Excessive wait times plagued the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center emergency room in 2007. An entirely new and more efficient way of doing business had to be found. Dr. Karen Murell became the head of the lean program, a system of management methods and tools used in manufacturing for 25 years to improve things. Over six years, considerable improvements in the department's key performance indicators have been made. Patients and the emergency department were not adversely affected due to the plan to increase capacity and flow in a healthcare setting. This paper will look at the analysis of the strategic plan of the Kaiser Permanente case study.
