Slide1: Introduction: Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) entails a structured strategic process that involves physicians and other personnel in the implementation and planning of improvements in the process of care to attain quality care outcomes (Kimmons & Stucky, 2010). Healthcare institutions utilize CQI to optimize care by reducing errors, costs, and ensuring that the regulatory requirements are achieved. The primary aim of CQI is to enhance customer service and satisfaction.
Slide 2: CQI Methods: Numerous frameworks are used in CQI implementation. The choice of a particular framework depends on the objectives of the CQI process, the scope of the CQI efforts, the amount, quality, and type of data available and the time required to implement the CQI framework (HHS, n.d.). Lean Six Sigma is one of the frameworks that is used to enhance care quality in clinical processes.
Slide 3: Lean Six Sigma: The purpose of Six Sigma is to eradicate waste and flaws, which enhances quality and efficiency by streamlining and refining the clinical processes. In this regard, six sigma produces better operational efficiency with cost-effective and quality care. Combining Lean with Six Sigma ensures that the implementation accelerates CQI and delivers better results compared to what would be achieved by using either of the approaches. There is evidence that Lean Six Sigma impacts clinical areas, including medical delivery and infection control (AHRQ, 2015). There are five main steps in the implementation process for Lean Six Sigma, which are: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control.
Slide 4: What is Needed Before Implementation: Before the process is started, the continuous quality improvement team must ensure that the chosen project is the right candidate for improvement. There are three main must-have aspects for a project to be improved. The project must have an obvious problem in the clinical process; has improvement will result in higher revenue, minimal costs, or enhanced efficiency; and the project must have collectible data (GoLeanSixSigma, 2012).
Slide 5: Define: In this stage, the team must define the leading cause of problems in the process. This allows them to understand the specific needs of the patients or clients in the process. In Lean Six Sigma, the phase is essential because it outlines the efforts for the implementation team and the leadership.
