Communication is a process wherein there is an interchange of information or a message from the sender to the receiver and vice versa. This process may involve several channels to relay the message, and these media may either be oral or written. As one receives a message from the sender, the other party decodes the message and will, later on, reply with feedback to complete the whole communication process. Several barriers to communication exist, which may interfere with the understanding of the relayed message. These barriers may even lead to misconceptions, misunderstandings, or conflicts (Tutorialspoint, n.d.). The boundary between cultures is largely dependent on communication psychology, where people are trained by their environment to have a specific language unique to their communities.
The differences in communication patterns among cultures exist secondary to cultural variability, which was shaped by various civilizations that came into one place. Each of these civilizations has their exclusive and distinctive practices and principles which influence the ways of living of the people in one specific area (Gudykunst & Lee as cited in Gudykunst, 2003).
Numerous factors are responsible for the variations in communication patterns. These include cultural, ethnic, and racial identities, gender roles, age, social system, and individual characteristics.
