Mandatory Retirement in Global and Canadian Context
Mandatory retirement is a controversial topic in most countries considering the demands that it fosters. Countries that have implemented mandatory retirement demand that people who have reached a particular age retire. Retirement under mandatory requirements does not take into consideration factors like the physical or mental health status of an individual at the time of retirement. Still, there are factors like shortage of labor or requirement of specific skills that have motivated employers to adopt or abolish the requirements. That is, mandatory retirement requirement steers employee turnover rates thereby opening a platform for younger employees to secure jobs while also posing a range of ethical and practical concerns both in Canada and in other countries like Japan, Germany, and France.
Current State of Retirement Conditions/Laws/Regulations in Different Countries
Mandatory retirement has attracted different policies, laws, and conditions in various countries. Presently, most countries lean toward abolishing mandatory retirement requirements. However, there are still countries that emphasize the conditions in their regulations. In Japan, the policy demands that people retire at the age of 60 (OECD, 2023). However, most Japanese companies ignore the policy as people are allowed to partake in non-regular employment positions even after reaching the mandatory age. Australia, conversely, has deployed a more flexible approach to retirement. In Australia, employees are allowed to choose their retirement age. Australia has implemented policies to address issues like the need for experienced employees in some workplaces as well as the continued issue of aging in Australia’s labor market (Bateman & Piggott).
The US and a few countries in the European Union have showcased unique approaches to retirement requirements. The US, for instance, abolished mandatory retirement in 1986. Under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1986, the US eliminated all age restrictions in the workplace, except for specific roles such as pilots or law enforcement (OECD, 2023). In the EU, Germany has increased the retirement age to 67. Additionally, the German government offers incentives to employers who retain older individuals. However, France has retained a low retirement age due to strong union influence and cultural attitudes towards work.
