Executive Summary
In the United States, the construction of commercial and residential buildings impacts the environment through land use, material consumption, operational energy consumption and water usage, and waste generation in the building phase. Further, according to a report by the intergovernmental panel on climate change ( IPCC), buildings accounted for 32% of all energy use, 19% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, and 51% of electricity consumption ( 2014). Further, in 2010 residential buildings accounted for 74% of total energy consumption compared to commercial buildings with 26%. Additionally, most of a building’s emissions result from its operation, in which most buildings are estimated to have a lifespan of 100+ years. The initial design and construction of a building are crucial as it affects its long-term operational use. Thus, the best innovative creations are crucial in construction.
Notably, the treatment and disposal of construction materials are crucial once they have reached their end of life. Mostly the materials are disposed of in the landfill, recycled, composted, or reused without changing their original states. It is an important process of construction to avoid wastage and environmental pollution. In the united states, the construction and demolition materials sent to the land were 23% of the total waste. Further, it is estimated by 2025, the construction and demolition materials will reach up to 2.2 billion tons.
This trend and projection led to the establishment of Green Homes in the U.S. In the early 1960s, a need to develop ecologically-conscious architecture was established to monitor human interactions and built environments relating to landscapes and buildings in the natural surrounding. In the 1970s, construction concentrated more on energy efficiency within commercial and building areas. In the 1990s, green homes were embraced as a formal venture. There was the formation of the Committee on the Environment by the American Institute of Architects in 1989, the launch of the Energy Star program (1992 )by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the founding of the U.S. Green Building Council in 1993, and the certified green buildings were present in over 160 countries by 2018. Consumers were satisfied and appreciated energy efficiency, quality indoor air, water conservation, and environmentally friendly building materials. This led to the development of green and sustainable construction companies whose competitive advantage was on how environmentally conscious they were to their consumers. Introduction
Mandalay Homes was established in 1999 as a small firm home builder in Phoenix but later relocated to Prescott, Arizona. Mandalay serves a fast-growing market in the northern Arizona region, serving young families, retired active adults, and professionals who work remotely. Additionally, Mandalay is nationally recognized for its efficiency innovation and renovation model in sustainable home construction after its partnership with Phoenix City for energy-efficient projects. The customers expect the homes to be relatively cheaper than where they relocated, yet with quality services.
In the 2010s, Mandalay constructed 250 homes per year in planned neighborhood development. Customers would select their homes for residential or commercial and customize them to their taste. Further, Mandalay achieved high energy efficiency through different construction standard features of their units. Additionally, partnership with Mosaic group, a tech company that enhanced the dynamics of their units and ensured their innovation was relevant. In the 2020s, Mandalay committed to the expansion and increasing the number of built units to 300 by 2024. This means that their commitment is renovation, innovation, and growth while at the same time being sustainable.
