The globe has several challenges than demand effective leadership than never before in corporations, communities, institutions, and governments.
In response to societal challenges, communities deserved to get leaders who understand these problems and can take front space in the provision of solutions.
My philosophical view of leadership is that it is a shared purpose-driven process. Thus, leadership has some feature which includes:
* It is a collective and reciprocal process.
* It has a mutual influence.
* It involves the pooling of risks, resources, and skills.
* It entails the organization and coordination of efforts towards a specific goal.
* The people are lead towards the set goals through a mission statement, organization vision, and inspiration.
* It is an integrative and collaborative process and assumes both informal and formal pathways.
The purpose of leadership is to inspire and lead people to find solutions for existing problems. The leadership sphere is obliged to create a shared goal or purpose and use it as leverage to set goals, missions, and visions.
The best leaders can be described as those who have integrity, transparency, can inspire, are enablers and facilitators of others, and love to motivate and celebrate the achievements of others.
For me, to be an authentic leader, one needs to have desirable leadership qualities that include the ability to inspire, who is ready to grow, who can aid others to achieve their goals, and be able to create honesty and transparent relationships with the followers.
Introduction
The contemporary globe is faced with a myriad of problems that demands urgent solutions. It is only authentic, distinguished, loyalty, and trustable leaders who can provide feasible solutions. Leadership is one of the most relevant themes that permeate through all societies and diverse groups of people. Leadership is a concept that has been in existence since antiquity. The available written records trace leadership to Plato’s time in the west as well as Sun Tzu in the east, but no consensus has been reached regarding its definition despite being widely taught and discussed (Grint et al., 2016). Still, Grint and his colleagues warned us against equating leadership to management; management is about the execution of routines and maintaining organizational stability while leadership is quite a novelty, direction setting, change, persuasion, and movement. Leadership can be defined from multiple perspectives that include person-based, result-based, position-based, purpose-based, and process-based leadership. Leadership is not only reserved for humanity but also the animal kingdom; even animals, whether wild animals or domestic ones, illustrate the fundamental elements of leadership elements through behavioral patterns. It is a highly debatable topic that is subject to multiple interpretations. Leadership is about corporate institutions, families, governments, authorities, ancient kingdoms, international organizations, and individuals, just to mention a few. Despite heterogeneity in the application of leadership across multiple realms, social classes, and communities, many agree on fundamental standard features that constitute leadership. In most of the cases, we can always know whether there is good or bad leadership in a given context. This paper is a culmination of my philosophical view on leadership, the purpose of leadership, and viewpoints on both exemplary and authentic leaders or leadership.
My Philosophy of Leadership
My philosophy in leadership is that it is a shared responsibility or leadership towards a given goal or purpose. Shared leadership denotes leadership that is collective and show a reciprocal activity that dispersed among the team members in the organization (Fauising et al., 2015). Shared leadership is about ongoing mutual influence within a team that is characterized by both official and unofficial leaders. When I tie leadership to a mission, it becomes easy for mean to understand the desirable behavioral patterns, attitudes, and principles that constitute leadership.
I always perceive leadership is a flexible and amenable concept that is aimed at proving a sense of direction and meaning to individuals and organizations. Leadership is about visions, mission, strategies, and inspirations; in devoid of these concepts, we will lack a sense of direction, lose hope, see no meaning in life, and achieve nothing. Leadership is a predictor of the institutional direction, spirit, and discipline (Anwar & Hasnu, 2013). Kempster, Jackson & Conroy (2011) described leadership as a person, results, position, and process. Thus, I describe leadership as a heartbeat of a person’s life, community, and organizations, for instance, government. I view leadership as something which is engraved in each one of us and our different capacities, spaces, and responsibilities. We must individualize and define leadership in our natural ways; this should be supported by the goal of which type of person you desire to be.
The concept of leadership is inescapable from organizations. Organizations can only achieve their fundamental goals if people at all levels in the organization exhibit proper leadership. I feel that organizations are well-positioned to build and contextualize leadership. Organizations are non-existent when leadership is absent. Thus, it is an aspect of leadership that harmonies different systems in a way that it results in an organized framework. We must view the organization as a manifestation of leadership. The organization can only be realized when different people work together by pooling a diverse range of resources and skills; this ought to be capped by thrust and commitment. In the crux, it appears that leadership is an evenly shared responsibility to provide a sense of direction and to inspire. Emphasis should be placed on the external empowering of leadership, task and goal interdependence in a bid to create shared leadership as well as fruitful interrelationships between shared leadership and team performance (Fausing et al., 2015)
Since leadership is about shared responsibility, it implies that one must collaborate with others. As a result of the collaboration aspect, individual leadership, should be modeled in an approach that nurtures collective leadership. Leadership is not about one individual in an organization but everybody. I always feel bad when I see people apportioning leadership to a few people in organizations and failed to notice that it is a shared responsibility. It is problematic to think that leadership is the preserve of the company's’ chief executive offices and other managers because when these people are assigned as the only epicenter of leadership, they might make decisions that are devious to people's needs. The days when managers were perceived as echelons of command and control are long gone. Mistakes have occurred over time where top leaders and those who wield authority are trained on leadership, leaving out the rest of the team. The uneven focus on positions of authority has adverse consequences that include the constriction of opportunities related to innovation and creativity. We should not give undue focus on downward influence and leadership emanating from one individual, and attention should be shifted to align with leadership processes that sprout within the team members (Fausing et al., 2015). Leadership should be embraced by all in a bid to ensure that there is a harmonized flow of ideas, attitudes, skills, beliefs, commitment, and trust in a given organization.
I suggest that leadership is a shared responsibility; this means that all relevant people and stakeholders must make leadership input regarding decision making, for instance, through the provision of pieces of advice to an organization’s management. We expect individuals in o...
