She was the first woman of black origin to have served as a security adviser to the United States of America. She went on to serve as the Secretary of State, still maintaining her title of the first black woman to serve in that position. She was born in 1954, November 14, in Birmingham, Alabama as the only child. She proceeded to serve as the first woman and first African American provost of Stanford University in 1993. Her appointment to the two national positions she held was courtesy of George Walker Bush. She graduated from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1974 and went on to pursue her Master’s at the University of Notre Dame in 1975. She later graduated with a Ph.D. from the same university in 1981 and went on to work as a professor in political science in the same year at Stanford University (Biography, 2018).
